This Weekend is Random Act’s “Annual Melee of Kindness” (AMOK). Won’t you join us?
By way of introduction, let me tell you a story… When i was a kid, we didn’t have a lot of money and a woman driving by saw me and my mom sleeping in a tent on the side of the road. She stopped talked to my mom and an hour later we had checked into a motel and were walking to Abdow’s Big Boy, a burger place with a $14 gift certificate in our hands. This kind stranger had seen that we were down on our luck, she stopped and she paid for us to have a good night’s sleep and a hot meal. I was 6 years old and I’m still talking about it. That one, simple gesture from a stranger has stuck with me my whole life.
My challenge to you: see if you can make a life-long memory by noticing someone and doing something thoughtful for them this Sunday. If you have an elderly neighbor who’s alone, visit them. If you see a homeless person, get them a motel room, or a meal or a book. Wherever you are this weekend, try going out of your way to make a difference in someone’s day.
If you live near Los Angeles and want to join me for an AMOK flash mob, come to the intersection of 5th and Los Angeles Street in downtown Los Angeles at 10AM this Sunday, March 2nd. There are a lot of homeless people in that neighborhood. Bring backpacks filled with things you would like to receive if you were living on the street that we can give away. Fill your gift backpacks with anything from toothpaste to playing cards from sleeping bags to radios to from harmonica’s to cookies. We’ll walk around as a group and find people who could use a boost.
If you don’t live near LA, post about your AMOK act on Twitter or Tumblr with #AMOK, or send photos or videos to us at www.therandomact.org.
At the very least, be nice to yourself this weekend.
